Resort Profile

The lone kid-friendly section of the sprawling El Dorado Royale resort complex about halfway between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, Generations Riviera Maya caters well to families with plenty to do; there can be quite a few kids here, so it isn’t ideal for couples at peak times of year. The beach, while not poor in quality, isn’t overly impressive by Riviera Maya standards, mostly due to a rocky ocean (the sand is fine); this factor downgrades the Overall Beach Resort Rating from the upper to lower A range. However, the resort offers swim-up suites and extremely unique balcony pools (the balcony pools allow the swim-up suites to exist on all of the upper floors as well as the ground floor) – this layout is similar to sister property El Dorado Seaside Suites farther down the coast, but isn’t found basically anywhere else. Other highlights include sizable accommodations with modern amenities, great butler service, an expansive main swimming pool, and excellent ocean views (all rooms are oceanfront suites). The restaurants are good for an all-inclusive, although portion sizes can be small and reservations are often required. Adults have access to all amenities at the El Dorado sister hotels next door, including the restaurants, but some are a long walk. Activities include beach volleyball, sunrise yoga classes, scuba diving, parasailing, kayaking, tennis, spin classes, wine tastings, and dance lessons. Jet skiing, ATV tours and horseback riding are also offered on-site, which is unique for the Riviera Maya.

Complimentary on-site COVID-19 antigen tests are available for guests returning to the United States. PCR tests are also available at a discounted rate. In the event of a positive test, the hotel will provide accommodations for up to 14 nights free of charge.

The TripValue score compares a resort’s Overall Beach Resort Rating to its average room price (which we express as the Price-Implied Rating). It tells you if the resort is relatively underpriced (a positive TripValue), overpriced (a negative TripValue), or fairly priced (an Even TripValue), on average.
