Set on an ecological reserve northwest of Puerto Vallarta, Grand Matlali Hills is decidedly upscale for its price tag, and caters especially well to couples with outstanding panoramic pool views. With a +5 TripValue, it’s one of the best bargains in the Puerto Vallarta area. True to its name, the resort is set in the hills and not directly on the beach; the beach is a 10-minute shuttle ride away, which downgrades the Overall Beach Resort Rating to the lower A range. On-site activities are lacking somewhat and the fitness center is well below average. The food at the on-site restaurants is very good, however (especially for an all-inclusive) and the overall hotel service is decidedly more personalized than most properties’ in this price range. There are adults-only sections of the resort (including three of the restaurants and some of the bars and lounges), but kids are still welcome in general. For the most part, the atmosphere is quite tranquil and quiet. Other perks include excellent dining variety, a tiered infinity pool area (again, with incredible views), yoga and dance classes, and a nice spa. The villas are substantially larger than the suites, and come with private terraces with pools and fully-equipped kitchens. Private chefs can be reserved for guests staying in villas.
On-site COVID-19 testing is not available, but there are testing providers in the area.
