An eco-friendly, adults only boutique resort with luxurious, candlelit treehouse-style accommodations for two and no electricity, Tulum’s AZULIK is ideal for couples looking for a peaceful, unique, off-the-grid vacation (and don’t mind roughing it just a bit). It’s only a 3.5-star hotel and there’s no swimming pool (collectively, these factors have a strong negative effect on the Overall Beach Resort Rating, downgrading it from the upper A range to the lower A range), on-site activities are limited, the room bathrooms lack privacy, mosquitoes can be an issue, and the clothing-optional atmosphere may not be for everyone; but the resort offers an excellent spa with ancient Mayan rituals and treatments using local ingredients and herbs (including Temazcal steam sessions and quality couples massages), very personalized service, a pristine and quiet beach (albeit small by Riviera Maya standards), romantic fine dining at three on-site restaurants, daily yoga classes, and memorable 360-degree panoramic ocean and jungle views from the villas’ elevated outdoor decks. The Mayan ruins at Tulum are a short drive up the road.
