An affordable all-inclusive option along Ixtapa’s main beach hotel strip, within walking distance of shops and restaurants, the Barcelo Ixtapa caters well to families. The beach is only decent at best by Mexico standards, the spa and fitness facilities are relatively lackluster, the rooms have dated furniture and other elements, and the food fails to impress; but the property offers two nice oceanfront swimming pools, strong restaurant variety (two buffets and four a la carte; it can be difficult to get reservations at the a la cartes, however), a kids club for ages 5-12, and room balconies with excellent ocean views. The staff is mostly friendly, but the overall service gets inconsistent reviews. 350 rooms and 48 villas compose the resort; Family Villas can accommodate up to five people and Superior Family Villas can accommodate up to six, with ample space. Activities include live entertainment, banana boat rides, jet skiing, a seasonal baby sea turtle release program, and excursions via boat or sailboat to nearby Zihuatanejo Bay or Playa Las Gatas. There’s a fairly good golf course right next door. Downtown Zihuatanejo, another coastal town, is about 10 miles away.
On-site COVID-19 testing is offered prior to departure, but it isn’t complimentary.
