A massive adults-only resort about halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, El Dorado Royale caters well to couples with a mostly relaxed atmosphere, beach and pool butler service, and plenty of activities. The resort shares amenities with the neighboring villa-style Casitas section of the complex, but its rates are usually considerably lower (the Casitas section definitely has better rooms, however). The beach, while not poor in quality, isn’t overly impressive for the Riviera Maya, mostly due to a rocky ocean (the sand is fine); this factor downgrades the Overall Beach Resort Rating from the upper to lower A range. However, the numbers here are decidedly impressive: the resort complex boasts 14 swimming pools (with an array of swim-up bars, and including a saltwater pool), 15 restaurants, 9 bars, and an excellent 20,000-square-foot spa. The eco-friendly property also harvests vegetables from its 76,000-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse. The restaurants are very good for an all-inclusive, although portion sizes can be small and reservations are often required. Suites with jacuzzis, private plunge pools, and lazy river swim-up access are available. Activities include scuba diving, parasailing, kayaking, tennis, yoga and spin classes, wine and mezcal tastings, and dance lessons. Jet skiing, ATV tours, and horseback riding are also offered on-site, which is unique for the Riviera Maya.
Complimentary on-site COVID-19 antigen tests are available for guests returning to the United States. PCR tests are also available at a discounted rate. In the event of a positive test, the hotel will provide accommodations for up to 14 nights free of charge.
