Part of a two-property Iberostar complex in the Playacar district just south of Playa del Carmen, the Iberostar Quetzal offers a unique natural setting, is praised for its ecosystem preservation efforts, and caters well to both families and couples; its neighbor is the Iberostar Tucan, which is virtually identical. The resort charismatically blends into its surrounding jungle habitat, with native wildlife such as howler monkeys, various birds including the Royal Palm Turkey, fish and turtles. The on-site dining is only mediocre overall, some restaurants have a dress code, the rooms are quite basic for the price point, and the fitness center is only decent and lacks air conditioning; but the property offers an outstanding stretch of wide, white-sand beach (the Playacar beach is renowned), a beautiful main swimming pool area, a separate adults-only pool with an impressive swim-up bar, a good spa with beachfront massages, a kids club, and a very friendly staff. Water sports include scuba diving, jet skiing, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, and windsurfing. Other activities include beach volleyball, beach soccer, yoga classes, tennis, and aerobics classes in the pool. An entertainment team keeps activities going throughout the day, but there are plenty of areas here for peace and quiet.
Free COVID-19 antigen tests are available on-site for all guests returning to the United States. PCR tests are also offered for a fee.
