A slight step up from its sister hotel neighbors that share the same resort complex, the Grand Bahia Principe Coba (Ba1) and Tulum (Baa2), the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal caters well to both couples and families. It’s not quite as upscale, however, as the adults-only Sian Ka’an section, its other neighbor. The rooms are relatively basic (and a little dated) for a resort of this class, some restaurants require long pants for men, and part of the ocean is quite rocky; but the property offers a nice white-sand beach (the best beach of the complex), a sleek-looking swimming pool area just steps from the sand, a nice swim-up bar, a spa with Mayan-inspired treatments and hydrotherapy, an on-site dolphinarium (a negative attribute for many), outstanding dining variety, and a casino and nightclub. The Riviera Maya Golf Club is just across the road. A shuttle is provided to get around the grounds; guests have access to the amenities of the Tulum and Coba sections next door, including a kids pool with small water slides. One complimentary hour of non-motorized water sports such as kayaking, sailing, and snorkeling per day is included in the all-inclusive rate. Other activities include scuba diving (one lesson is complimentary), dance and aerobics classes, and kids activities at the kids club. The Mayan ruins at Tulum aren’t far.
Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts is offering the COVID-19 viral antigen test on-site and at no cost to guests traveling back to the United States. Test results will be received within 24-48 hours prior to departure as required by the CDC, in written and/or electronical format. Guests should contact the Front Desk upon arrival to schedule departure testing. In the event of a positive test, the affected guest and a companion can extend their stay up to 10 days at no additional cost. A three-night minimum stay is required to be eligible for both the free on-site test and the 10-day extension.
