Resort Profile

Right in the middle of action, steps from Cancun’s best nightlife, Hotel Riu Cancun caters well to singles and couples with a lively party vibe; it’s the more economical of two Riu properties in this location. The other is the mid-range, adults-only Riu Palace Las Americas (Ba2). Riu Palace Las Americas guests have non-reciprocal access to the amenities of Riu Cancun. Two other Riu resorts are a few minutes down the road – the more economical Riu Caribe (B2) and the mid-range Riu Palace Peninsula (Baa2). The Riu Dunamar (Ba1) and Riu Palace Costa Mujeres (A2) are farther away, in a more isolated location on Playa Mujeres to the north. The beach at Riu Cancun is smaller and less impressive than beaches at Cancun properties to the south, along the eastern edge of the Hotel Zone (this factor has a negative effect on the Overall Beach Resort Rating); but the water is calmer and safer for swimming, with less wind typically. The food gets mixed to lackluster reviews, dining variety is only decent for an all-inclusive (four a la carte restaurants plus buffet), reserving lounge chairs can be difficult, the fitness center fails to impress, and much of the pool and beach area is shaded by the late afternoon; but the resort offers a nice infinity pool overlooking the beach, a second pool with a lively swim-up bar, a small spa, and a fun entertainment team. Rooms are modern but basic in terms of amenities (no shampoo or room service); they do come with balconies, re-stocked minibars, and liquor dispensers, however, and many have excellent ocean views. Activities include scuba diving, deep sea fishing, jet skiing, snorkeling excursions, beach volleyball, sailing, and kayaking.

Guests returning to the U.S. can take the COVID-19 antigen test on-site. There is no additional cost for all adults and children. This service is available at all Riu resorts in Mexico (except Riu Plaza Guadalajara), Jamaica, Aruba, and Punta Cana and is provided by an accredited medical testing lab that complies with the requirements of the CDC. Test results are received within 72 hours prior to departure, as required by the CDC. In the event of a positive test, Riu Hotels will provide an extension of up to 10 days at no cost.
