On the north end of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the towering Riu Palace Peninsula opened in 2012 and caters well to couples and singles with contemporary elements and a social (but not rowdy) atmosphere; it’s the more upscale of two Riu properties in this location. The other is the more economical Riu Caribe (B2). Two other Riu resorts are a few minutes down the road, closer to the middle of the action and Cancun’s best nightlife – the more economical Riu Cancun (B1) and the mid-range, adults only Riu Palace Las Americas (Ba2). The Riu Dunamar (Ba1) and Riu Palace Costa Mujeres (A2) are farther away, in a more isolated location on Playa Mujeres to the north. The beach at Riu Palace Peninsula is smaller and less impressive than most in Cancun (and part is quite rocky). This factor has a negative effect on the Overall Beach Resort Rating, but the water is also calmer and safer for swimming than at most beaches in Cancun (and the rocky portions are naturally alluring in a way). The food gets mixed to lackluster reviews; but the property offers an outstanding, modern swimming pool area (four pools total, with a swim-up bar and an adults-only pool), well-manicured grounds, fairly strong dining variety, good overall service, solid spa and fitness facilities, and indoor and outdoor live entertainment venues. The rooms are modern, stylish, and well-equipped; they come with liquor dispensers, private balconies or terraces, sleek décor, hydro-massage bathtubs, and flat-screen TVs. There are three Adults-Only Deluxe Villas on-site as well, with additional perks such as romantic dinners on the beach (at an extra charge). Activities include scuba diving, deep sea fishing, jet skiing, snorkeling excursions, sailing, parasailing, and kayaking.
Guests returning to the U.S. can take the COVID-19 antigen test on-site. There is no additional cost for all adults and children. This service is available at all Riu resorts in Mexico (except Riu Plaza Guadalajara), Jamaica, Aruba, and Punta Cana and is provided by an accredited medical testing lab that complies with the requirements of the CDC. Test results are received within 72 hours prior to departure, as required by the CDC. In the event of a positive test, Riu Hotels will provide an extension of up to 10 days at no cost.
